GMC Dealers Required To Invest Around $140K To Sell Hummer EV

The funds will towards equipment, tools, training, and charging stations.

The high-powered, all-electric powertrain in the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup represents a major departure from the Hummers of yore. As such, GMC dealers are required to make a not-insignificant investment in order to sell the new battery-powered Hummer EV.

According to a recent report from Detroit Free Press, roughly half of the 1,900 GMC dealers in the U.S have decided to invest up to $140,000 in order to sell the all-new 2022 Hummer EV pickup. The report also cites a recent virtual national dealer meeting wherein “GMC leaders” shared that the automaker has received some 10,000 preorders for the new Hummer Edition 1, prompting dealers to get on board with the hefty investment.

“The Hummer Edition 1 sold out in 10 minutes and they said they had enough orders for it to fulfill their first year of production currently,” one unidentified dealer who attended the meeting was quoted as saying. “But they are evaluating if they can build more.”

According to the report, GMC dealers are offered a voluntary participation agreement to upgrade and sell the brand’s upcoming range of all-electric models, including the new Hummer EV. The upgrades can cost upwards of $140,000, which will be used for tools and equipment, as well as EV charging stations and employee training.

“A lot of the cost in there is the electric infrastructure and their charging ability,” said GMC spokeswoman Michelle Malcho. “If [dealers] have a modern electrical system, their cost will be less. If they need to update that for the charging station, that’s where the $140,000 comes in.”

In addition to upgrading to sell the new Hummer EV, GMC dealers will also need the new equipment, tools, charge stations, and training to sell upcoming electric version of the brand’s full-size pickup truck, the GMC Sierra.
