Repurposed for civilian duty from the military’s High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, or Humvee for short), the Hummer H1 was never intended for fun on the racetrack. In fact, the design was never really intended for anything beyond the battlefield. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from tweaking the Hummer to suit all sorts of new roles, including, believe it or not, a spot of drifting, as evidenced in the following video.

Coming to us from the Hagerty YouTube channel, the video is hosted by Matt Farah, who climbs behind the wheel of two very special examples of the Hummer H1.

The first is a complete ground-up restomod from Mil-Spec Automotive, a custom shop that specializes in creating street-friendly Hummer H1 builds dressed to the nines for comfort and street presence. Priced at about a quarter million bucks, a Mil-Spec Hummer is certainly not cheap, but for the money, customers get a complete rebuild stuffed with high-end components. Highlights include a brand-new interior with sumptuous upholstery and the latest features, as well as a modern Chevrolet Duramax diesel powerplant connecting to a six-speed Allison transmission and two-speed transfer case. The exterior is also upgraded, gaining LED lighting, kevlar coating for the body panels, and several other custom touches, but the overall style remains recognizable as the iconic Hummer H1.

It’s an killer bit of kit, but what comes next is even more impressive. After driving the restomod Mil-Spec Hummer H1, Farah heads to a local circle track to pilot another Mil-Spec creation, namely the company’s test mule, a stripped-down 1992 soft-top with 1,500 pounds cut from the curb weight. The mule also comes equipped with the company’s Duramax powertrain, which has been tuned to produce a whopping 800 horsepower and 1,300 pound-feet of torque.

Routed exclusively to the rear wheels, this thing has the goods to run the quarter mile in just 10 seconds – or, get completely sideways, as the case may be.
