The genesis of the new SUV and pickup.
The all-new Hummer EV is a stunning piece of design, offering a mix of bold, off-roader style, and futuristic all-electric panache. Now, one designer is showing off some early design sketches that give us an idea of the Hummer EV’s styling genesis.
The early Hummer EV concept sketches were recently posted to social media by Brian Malczewski, Lead Exterior Designer at GMC’s parent company, General Motors, who played an integral role in developing the new Hummer EV SUV and Hummer EV pickup. According to Malczewski, the truck and SUV were designed simultaneously, which makes sense given the obvious styling similarities between the two.
These particular renderings appear to show the GMC Hummer SUV, with square proportions and a tall rear hatch section, rather than the bed of the Hummer EV pickup.
The look definitely recalls the styling of the earlier-generation models, including the original Hummer H1. The front fascia sports an array of vertical slats along the grille, which are bookended by horizontal headlights and lower lighting elements. The lower fascia also includes stylized recovery hooks with a yellow finish, as well as a skid plate element leading to the undercarriage.
In the corners, we find this Hummer EV concept riding on enormous wheels and tires, which pad the vehicle’s off-roading intentions with chunky rubber. We also see the concept’s squared-off fenders, a design element echoed by the production vehicle.
Finally, in back, the Hummer EV concept gets a rectangular hatch section with a large spare wheel mounted against the gate, similar to the production Hummer EV design.
Malczewski says that these renderings were some of the first sketches he did for the Hummer EV program, and clearly, the aesthetic made the transition to production status without too much trouble.
