Hummer EV Will Use Google Android Automotive OS: Video

No smartphone necessary.

The all-new Hummer EV is filled to bursting with tech and the latest cutting-edge features. That includes the infotainment spec, which will is set to run the new Google Android Automotive operating system.

Per a recent report from Road Show, the Hummer EV will come with the Google Android Automotive OS as part of its infotainment system spec. Unlike Android Auto, which essentially acts as phone “projection” by carrying over smartphone features to the infotainment screen interface, the Android Automotive OS is powered exclusively by the vehicle infotainment system. As such, it doesn’t require a smartphone to operate.

That means the Hummer EV will offer a variety of functions and features right out of the box, with Google Assistant voice command on deck for easy and intuitive operation.

A few noteworthy features includes Google Maps navigation, access to music, podcasts, and satellite radio, and locating points of interest, such as electric vehicle charging stations. There’s also the option for text-to-speed communications and messaging, drive mode selection, and climate control.

It was previously reported that the new Hummer EV will leverage infotainment graphics powered by Epic’s Unreal Gaming Engine for ultra-crisp visuals and snappy load times.

As a reminder, the Hummer EV features a 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen and 12.3-inch diagonal driver information cluster. In addition, the Hummer EV is outfitted with a range of widgets and digital tools specifically designed for off-roading, such as vehicle articulation, tire pressure readout, pitch and roll angles, chassis ride height, and more.

A video demonstration of the Hummer EV with Android Automotive OS onboard can be seen below. Clocking in at 1 minute, 29 seconds, the video leads the viewer through a handful of the all-electric Hummer’s infotainment features.
