Mil-Spec M1-R Is A Heavily Customized Hummer H1

Up to 800 horsepower is available.

In 2018, Michigan-based Mil-Spec Automotive introduced its first “re-envisioned” Hummer H1 truck, which it referred to as the Launch Edition. Three years later, it has announced an evolution of that vehicle called the M1-R.

“We focused on retaining the most successful elements of the Launch Edition while eliminating its weak points,” Mil-Spec says on its website. In particular, the company wanted to make the M1-R its highest-performance Hummer H1 to date.

To achieve this, it partnered with another Michigan company, HSP Diesel, which produced a formidable version of the GM 6.6L V8 LBZ Duramax turbo diesel engine fitted briefly to the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Heavy Duty pickup trucks. As standard, the engine produced 360 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. In the M1-R, it produces 500 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet of torque, or 800 horsepower and 1,300 pound-feet of torque as an option.

This energy is transferred to all four wheels through an Allison 1000 T6 transmission which is also built by HSP Diesel. The M1-R also has Rod Hall Racing suspension and optional six-piston Wilwood brakes.

Inside, Mil-Spec has “declared war on plastic.” Everything from minor switches to cup holders to air-conditioning vents is machined from billet and anodized, powder coated or covered in leather. Images show beautifully made leather upholstery, but this was tailored specially to the wishes of a client. Other customers will surely have their own idea of what they want.

The base price for the M1-R is $299,500, which includes the cost of Mil-Spec sourcing a donor Hummer H1 (usually a very tired one, as so much work needs to be done in the conversion). Many options are available, including a 12k winch, auxiliary lighting and a body package. Mil-Spec is also keen to work with customers on the final specification of the vehicle, so it would be difficult to place an upper limit on the possible cost of the vehicle. However, the people most interested in – and capable of – purchasing the M1-R are likely also the ones least likely to be put off by its price.
