The all-new 2022 Hummer EV is packed to the brim with high-tech features, enabling owners to go fast, conquer terrain, and travel in comfort. Among these features is the ability to start and drive the vehicle using only a compatible smartphone.

Essentially, this feature uses the owner’s smartphone as a “digital key.” Compatible devices include both Apple iPhones and Android phones. Interestingly, the 2022 Hummer EV pickup is the first vehicle produced by General Motors to offer this digital key technology.

The system leverages Ultra-Wide-Band (or UWB) technology as well as Bluetooth Low Energy (or BLE) spectrums. This tech standard was designed by the Car Connectivity Consortium, a cross-industry organization focused on developing smartphone-to-car connectivity solutions. Hummer parent firm, General Motors, is a member of the Car Connectivity Consortium, so it makes sense that the Hummer EV would come equipped with the tech that enables this digital key feature.

The feature is currently in version 2.0, and uses Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology as the method by which the phone and vehicle “talk” to one another. Looking ahead, the Hummer EV will launch with Digital Key 3.0 support, with the UWB technology and BLE spectrums.

As HummerNation.com covered in the past, the Hummer EV pickup will also feature Google Infotainment Services, powered by Android. The infotainment suite includes things like hands-free calling and texting via Google Voice Assistant, as well as access to Google Navigation for things like locating EV charge stations.

The features are operated by way of the Hummer EV’s onboard 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen, with support from the 12.3-inch diagonal driver information center display.
